Slate has a very interesting article/prediction/preview on the intersecting futures of the old and new media. It’s worth the time to read. If you haven’t considered the coming collision, this is a good article to see just how blurred the industries may become. Private Capital’s proposal didn’t kill Google, but it signaled the newspaper industry’s […]
Newsday is the next company to begin a reduction program. I’ll be watching for any hints that Walt Handlesman may be affected. A memo written Friday by Publisher Timothy P. Knight and posted today at the Romenesko Web site at www.poynter.org saves the worst for last, revealing that “as we move through the process of […]
Back when Steve Benson (Arizona Republic) and Pat Bagley (Salt Lake Tribune) were students at Brigham Young University, they frequently created a stir on campus. There is a special feature running about BYU during the 70s with an article about the impact the Bagley and Benson had on their campus. Benson: ?It?s what they call […]
Clay Bennett, president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists, has sent a letter to the CEO of Tribune Co. Dennis FitzSimons regarding their letting Michael Ramirez go and not planning to hire another cartoonist. Bennett, an editorial cartoonist with The Christian Science Monitor, added: “There are few journalists in a newsroom who can define […]
The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily news have met their goal of buying out 75 employees so that they won’t have to lay-off anyone. NEW YORK Management at the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News apparently reached its buyout goals at the two papers and will not have to resort to layoffs.
The Kansas City Star has a story(free annoying registration required) about the 40th anniversary of A Charlie Brown Christmas Special that will air on December 6. The plot is thin. The pace is slow. The music is decidedly not rock ?n? roll. ?A Charlie Brown Christmas? is a beloved piece of Americana, despite its flaws […]
Everything is being released on DVD and Garfield is releasing it’s 5th and final DVD collection. Two-dozen episodes from the 1993-4 season appear on the three-disc set. The Saturday-morning CBS series was based on the “Garfield” comic by Jim Davis, who is now with Universal Press Syndicate.
I reported this earlier, and the results are in on the amount of money raised by auctioning off Doonsbury artwork. NEW YORK Eight original portraits of “Doonesbury” characters sold for a combined $3,503 in an 11-day eBay auction that ended Saturday. Cartoonist Garry Trudeau donated the signed and framed portraits to Fisher House, which provides […]
After a depressing week last week with the news of Simpson, KAL and Ramirez, it’s nice to read a very lengthy feature on a Chris Britt. It’s worth the read. The brush Chris Britt uses to draw editorial cartoons is so fancy, it can?t be bought in Springfield. It?s a Winsor & Newton Series 7, […]
According to E&P who got the tip from the Comics Reporter, The Standard-Times in Massachusetts has officially apologized for running the ‘Get Fuzzy’ strip that implied that a local sportscaster was a drunk. NEW YORK The Standard-Times of New Bedford, Mass., has apologized to a Boston sportscaster for running a “Get Fuzzy” comic that implied […]
Need a good book to snuggle up with at night? Scott Adams’ book “God’s Debris” is now available for free. Why is the book being offered for free? “While it has been a solid financial success, it hasn’t reached its potential,” said Adams, whose “Dilbert” strip is syndicated by United Media. “I attribute that to […]
The Washington Examiner has an opinion article written by Michael Taube about how political leanings sneak into the comics page. Interesting read. Many modern comic strips and one-panel or multi-panel editorial cartoons are also politically charged. In some cases, the direct content of a strip is political, including conservative (Bruce Tinsley?s ?Mallard Fillmore?), liberal (Garry […]
This sounds like fun. More than 20 renowned cartoonists gathered yesterday at a Midtown bar to draw a cartoon mural inspired by a 1976 wall painting across the room that narrowly escaped destruction last year when the bar changed ownership.
It’s always interesting to read how certain comics are fairing in other newspapers. The DesMoines Register prints the results of their latest survey. Opinions ran the gamut. Many of you think our comics page is poor and needs major changes (or needs to run more comics, over two pages). But several said they like the […]
