New England Editoonist Awards
Skip to commentsThe New England Newspaper & Press Association’s [NENPA] Better Newspaper Competition is New England’s largest journalism recognition program.
NENPA has announced their Better Newspaper Competition winners for 2024.
In the Editorial Cartoon division they have awarded the honors to Hakan Sahin of the Harvard Press 1st Place; Tim Newcomb of Seven Days 2nd Place, and Peter Menice of The Hull Times 3rd Place.
NENPA judge’s comments on the winning cartoons:
Hakan Sahin cartoon: Closed for reprofitization – “This is what an editorial cartoon should be: clear, concise and blunt. The simplicity of the background focuses the reader’s attention on the message.”
Tim Newcomb cartoon – “Who won’t recognize the Shakespearean allusion? Nicely crafted, and the figures are instantly recognizable.”
Peter Menice cartoon: Bottleneck – “Well drawn cartoon that doesn’t even need a text explanation. I got it right away.”

The Hull Times celebrates the honor given to their editorial cartoonist Peter Menice:
Menice was up against the best of the best in a combined category across all six New England States. His winning entry, “Bottleneck,” skillfully illustrated the difficulties that local businesses faced during a particularly busy beach day, when traffic bottlenecks brought the town to a standstill, and prevented merchants from cashing in on the beachgoers crowding into Hull.
The Hull Times has won 17 NENPA awards over the years, including six cartooning awards honoring Menice’s work. His artistry has been in our pages since 1991.
