Years After His Death Don Addis Gets A Cartoon in The N.Y. Times

The New York Times famously does not print cartoons or comic strips, but they did on Earth Day.

Don Addis

Don Addis (1935-2009) made it into many magazines and newspapers during his time as an editorial cartoonist and comic strip creator (Briny Deep, Babyman, and The Great John L) but not The New York Times. Until now.

Admittedly it was to head an Earth Day ad for the Freedom From Religion Foundation, but it seems to be the only way to get a cartoon in The Old Gray Lady anymore – to buy its way in. (Or be part of a news story.)

  1. It reminds me (and yes, I am officially old) of that glorious day when the Revel plastic model company had a faux NY Times Sunday Funnies section, bringing false hope to millions of kiddies (and parents who thought they could get rid of the Sunday Herald Tribune).

  2. Rather odd and outdated Earth Day message, when in fact population shortages are reeking havoc in economies around the globe. Freedom from religion? Choose not to participate. Great to see Don’s work in print anytime…tops!

  3. Great followup DD. I had no idea about the background.
