Comic strips

Laffs and Gaffes

As Mike noted GoComics dropped the black line from Baby Blues today.

They did the same with Phoebe and Her Unicorn (and on the comic strip’s tenth anniversary no less).

Phoebe and Her Unicorn for March 30, 2025- no black
Phoebe and Her Unicorn for March 30, 2025 with black line and script included

On the other side of the tracks Comics Kingdom put out Prince Valiant with the blacks but no color.

So for the Thomas Scott Roberts fans among us:

Prince Valiant for March 30, 2025 in black and white
Prince Valiant for March 30, 2025 in color
Mary Worth March 27, 2025

Wilbur’s new friend had been named earlier but it wasn’t until Thursday’s Mary Worth that it hit me.

Back to Phoebe and Her Unicorn – Saturday was the last new daily strip for the comic. A first and last post:

first daily Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson March 30, 2015
last daily Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson March 29, 2025

For people arguing that the strip was not a psuedo-Calvin and Hobbes, it sure had that vibe.

Non Sequitur – It does not follow.

Non Sequitur by Wiley March 30, 2025

Hey Wiley, March has 31 days so April 1st is Tuesday not tomorrow.

Can’t pass up anyone riffing on Buster Keaton. Today it is Paul Trap and Thatababy.

  1. Maybe Non Sequitur takes place tomorrow?

  2. Gonna miss Phoebe Will Go Comics do reruns ?
Calvin had gotten just plain snotty by the end of his run. Phoebe has avoided that.

    1. If I had to guess, GoComics will probably start rerunning it. They could probably just hook up some algorithm that starts the weekday cartoons back at the beginning. That’s what I think they do with many of the rerun cartoons there already.

  3. Simpson’s never hidden the influence that Watterson and Schulz had on her work. I love it that Marigold is a real creature that presents to adults, and not a stuffed toy. Can we really talk about Watterson’s influence one Simpson and not pay attention to Milne’s influence on Watterson?

    1. For all that people compare Simpson’s work to Calvin and Hobbes, I’m more interested in the resemblance the premise has always had to Crockett Johnson’s Barnaby. I don’t know how much she or the editors helping develop the comic were thinking of that strip, though, which is always the problem in assigning influences.

It was hard to find Barnaby for decades before the recent collections, all of which came out after Phoebe and her Unicorn started running. But it would be a natural strip to think of as a model for your “human with magic-world friends”.
