R.E. Burke Released From ICE, Returns to UK
Skip to commentsBritish cartoonist R.E. Burke has been released from US custody and returned to the UK last night. She spent three weeks in an immigration detention center in Tucoma, WA after she was turned away from entering Canada due to a visa mix-up and she tried to re-enter the US.
A GoFundMe fundraiser was set up to help the family with legal expenses. As of this writing, the family has raised over $12,000. Three days ago, Rebecca’s father posted on Facebook that they were able to secure legal counsel.
Rebecca came to the US in January with the intent of spending four months backpacking across North America. She was using a cultural/hospitality exchange website to arrange for free lodging and meals in exchange for providing house work for the host family. Canada denied her entry because they considered the work she provided for the family as requiring a work visa. Upon returning to the US, she was arrested.
