Advance Papers March in with New Unified Comics Pages
Skip to commentsAdvance Publication newspapers are revising their comics pages this month.
The other day we noted that MLive Media, an Advance group, would add more comics in mid-March 2025. Jeff Glick, Director of Enterprise Content & Design for Print at Advance Local, informed us that it wasn’t just the Michigan group revising and adding to their comics pages but all the Advance (Newhouse) newspapers would be doing so.

Now The (Syracuse) Post-Standard is announcing their comics expansion starting March 4, 2025.
Beginning on March 4th, in the printed daily newspaper we will be offering 10 new comics and 47 additional in the e-newspaper. On Sundays, we’ll have 11 new comics in print and 5 more in the e-edition. Part of this change, though, means that some of the comics you’re used to seeing in print will now only be available online, and I’ll get to those specific changes below.
The breaking news here is that Advance Local is joining the growing list of newspaper groups (Gannett, Lee, McClatchy, PostMedia, Wick) that will have standard daily comics pages and Sunday sections across all their brands:
Syracuse.com and The Post-Standard are part of Advance Local, a company that operates newspapers and websites in nine states across the country. Until this change, each newspaper had its own comics, requiring unique page layouts every day. In creating uniform offerings across the company, we’re able to add more to the overall lineup.

Trish LaMonte, Vice President of Content for Advance Media New York, details the Post-Standard changes:
New in the printed daily paper: Baldo, Bizarro, Bound & Gagged, Frank & Ernest, Hi & Lois, Hocus Focus, Off the Mark, Red and Rover, Speed Bump, and The Born Loser.
New Sunday print comics will include: Sally Forth, Hi & Lois, Hagar the Horrible, Luann, Dennis the Menace, Close to home, Frank & Ernest, Prince Valiant, Rose is Rose, The Born Loser, and The Lockhorns.
Prince Valiant! Yay!

For The Post-Standard some comics are leaving print:
In the daily newspaper, 9 Chickweed Lane, Arctic Circle, Daddy’s Home, Drabble, Gasoline Alley, Gil Thorp, Grand Avenue, Mallard Filmore, Marvin, Rex Morgan M.D. and Rhymes With Orange will now only be available in the online newspaper, not in print.
My figgering reads that as a net gain of one for the daily comics.
From the Sunday edition, Mother Goose & Grimm, Rex Morgan M.D., and Rhymes with Orange are moving to the online newspaper only. Adam@Home, Arctic Circle, Bound & Gagged, Caption It!, Grand Avenue, Marvin, Rugrats, Shoe, Slylock Fox – Comics for Kids, and The Phantom will no longer appear in the printed or online Sunday newspapers, but you can still view them on syracuse.com.
That comes out to a net loss of two if my calculations are right.
As Mr. Glick noted the additions and subtractions include comics from all four comic syndicates: Andrews McMeel, Creators, King Features, and Tribune Content.

Trish adds a note:
This update does include a couple of changes that will take some getting used to. First, as I mentioned above, some of the comics you’re used to seeing in print will now only be available in the online newspaper, and we’re also going to stop printing “catch up” comics on the home delivery days. You’ll still be able to find those online.
According to Wikipedia The Post-Standard are home delivered only on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
The Letter From The Editor also lists dozens of comic strips and panels added to their online editions.
