A Gorey Centennial

EDWARD ST JOHN GOREY, a drawer of eccentric illustrations and a writer of peculiar stories, was born 100 years ago today on February 22, 1925.

Unsurprisingly The Edward Gorey House is having a centennial congregate the evening of the 22nd which, unfortunately for most of us, is sold out. (I really want to see the Edward Gorey Centennial pin.)

The Edward Gorey Charitable Trust has a list of events and exhibits being held this year to honor Mr. Gorey.

One of those events is The Library of Congress’ “100 Years of Edward Gorey” taking place now.

It is a shame the United States Post Office didn’t come through with a stamp to honor the occasion.

Amphigorey

Like many I came to Gorey late, with the early ’70s Amphigorey collection. After which I would eagerly purchase any Gorey book I would see on the shelves. The later Amphigorey collections were a godsend.

If you can’t be at The Edward Gorey House this weekend pull some Gorey books off the shelf and reread them, or get and read the highly recommended Gorey biography Born To Be Posthumous by Mark Dery.

At the very least scroll through Stephen Nadler’s archives of Edward Gorey ephemera.

  1. Thanks for this notification. I have been a Gorey fan since my college days—and that was many decades ago.
