Vikatan Magazine Blocked After Cover Cartoon Published

The Indian weekly magazine Vikatan is allegedly been blocked by the Indian government due to a complaint filed by the Bharatiya Janata Party president after an unflattering cartoon was published on the cover. The cartoon, responding to reports that Indians deported from the US are being handcuffed, depicts Prime Minister Narendra Modi in handcuffs alongside former U.S. President Donald Trump.

On February 15, Bharatiya Janata Party President Annamalai filed a complaint to the Press Council of India and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting alleging the cartoon “violates the Principles and Ethics published under the norms of journalistic conduct.” It ends with a request to “initiate suitable action against them as soon as possible.” The website was allegedly blocked later that evening.

The magazine says it never received notice that action was being taken. In a tweet last night pledged that it would pursue legal matters if it is discovered that the government had censored their publication.

At the time of this writing, The Daily Cartoonist is able to access the website. If the Indian government is blocking traffic it appears to be only blocking internal traffic.

  1. Looks like they’re taking a page out of Germany’s fascist “hate speech” policing enforcement. Sign your cartoon and face prosecution. Chilling censorship in the name of “ethical conduct”.
