Joe Sacco and Art Spiegelman Collaborate on Gaza Comic

The first of three cartoons by comic journalist Joe Sacco and graphic novelist Art Spiegelman, part of a collaboration on the topic of Gaza, has been published. Last month, news broke that the two had teamed up on a major graphic novel about Gaza. However, Art later clarified that his comment was misunderstood—the work he referred to is only a three-page comic. The February 27 edition of The New York Review features the first installment, titled Never Again and Again.

The full-page comic portrays a conversation between two cartoonists about the Israeli response to the Hamas attack on October 7, debating whether it should be termed genocide, ethnic cleansing, or a holocaust. The comic ends asking if Art is a “self-hating Jew” to which Art replies he’s a “self-hating atheist.”

No word on future installments.

Joe’s previous work regarding Gaza include Palestine, Footnotes in Gaza. Art is the author of the Pulitzer Prize–winning graphic novel Maus, that depicts the horrors of the Jewish holocaust.

Note: Per Nancy Beiman’s comment below, the all three installments of the cartoon are available on The Guardian’s website.

  1. Unfortunately the February issue is not available here in Toronto and the other two pages of this comic is behind a paywall. I do not want to purchase a subscription to the NYROB. I just want to buy this issue. Is there some way I could do this? Thanks.

  2. It’s in the February 14 GUARDIAN. Fortunately I have a subscription.

  3. Thanks for the tip about it being in the Guardian. I have updated my post.
