Nada Mougheeth, Wife of Ashraf Omar, Arrested
Skip to commentsNada Mougheeth, wife of imprisoned Egyptian cartoonist Ashraf Omar, was arrested last month after speaking to a reporter about her husbands detention and alleged abuse. She was charged with “accused of joining a terrorist organization and spreading false news” according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. Ahmed Serag, the journalist who conducted the interview with Nada, was also arrested. He has not been released.
During the interview, Nada claimed that when security forces arrested Ashraf they took 350,000 Egyptian pounds but only reported a fraction of that amount in the official interrogation records. Egypt’s Ministry of Interior alleges that her claim of theft is a lie and therefore she should be charged with spreading these false allegations.

Ashraf was arrested in July 2024 and charged with “joining a terrorist group, publishing false news, and misusing social media.” Ashraf, through his cartoons, is a vocal critic of the Egyptian government. His detention has been extended several times without being given a trial.
