General Manager: Kelsey Maher

Outgoing President Jack Ohman pens a farewell/state of the organization/passing the baton to Marc letter.

As I conclude my second term as AAEC president, I’d like to leave you with a few thoughts as I turn the job over to the very able Marc Murphy.

First, the AAEC is in fairly solid financial shape for the next five years or so, depending. I am hopeful that some long-pursued financial stability measures I have taken will pay off soon, and I am confident they will. Any event horizon in journalism that runs five years is pretty good. This means full conventions at what I hope are the same level of services we’ve been able to provide in the past.

Second, in conjunction with the AAEC Board, we moved forward on the final restoration of a functioning AAEC website…

Also moving from stage to audience is JP Trostle, AAEC’s Minister of Information:

So, as you might have heard, I’ll be stepping down soon as the Notebook editor (and editor of this site). The reason — and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but it’s true — is to spend more time with my family.

It is also true that I’ve been moving away from editorial cartooning for a long while, at least as far as publications that pay are concerned; as the cliche goes, I didn’t so much leave newspapers as they left me.

My run as editor encompassed 40 issues of the AAEC Notebook — a record —including the book-length 50th Anniversary “Golden Notebook,” and one actual book, “Attack of the Political Cartoonists.”

Beyond that, I helped launch two websites — three if you count the disastrous voyage of the damned that was our previous site — ran award contests, wrote who knows how many press releases, and advised presidents. The position mutated over the last quarter-century as it absorbed other responsibilities…

We send well wishes to the incoming, the outgoing, and those staying in place.

  1. Jack: Thanks for all the hard work during the challenging period for political cartoonists and satirists. Now get back here to Minnesota for a spell. We’ll go up north, get out in the boat, tie off some Lindy rigs, and catch us some walleye.

JP: Your service has repeatedly gone way over and above during your entire tenure as Notebook editor, website majority whip, chief cook and ink bottle washer, and the mortar that held our conferences together running in overdrive — in one case, even with a broken foot. You’ve earned your pardon, sir.

    Best of luck my friends,
-Steve Artley • AAEC member since 1984
