Editorial Cartoonist Jon Russo Signs with Creators Syndicate
Skip to commentsCreators Syndicate found a conservative political cartoonist to fill the empty left by Bob Gorrell’s retirement. Jon Russo signed with Creators last month/year with his first cartoon appearing there on December 26, 2024. While definitely on the right side of the fence he will not ignore the Republican party.
The Creators biography of Jon tells us:
His first editorial cartoon appeared in his junior high school newspaper: caricatures of Nixon and McGovern for the 1972 presidential election. Jon attended Louisiana State University and served as the political cartoonist for The Daily Reveille, winning awards for his ideas. While at LSU, he was also involved in advertising design and sales.
After graduation in 1980, he worked in advertising sales at the Times Picayune of New Orleans, serving there until 2001 when he moved to New York City to pursue his passion for stage and film acting.
In 2003, Jon relocated to Paris, furthering his work on stage and film. He returned to the New York area in 2008 and, while still accepting acting roles, began working as the editorial cartoonist for The Glen Ridge Voice and The Montclair Times newspapers.
That is where we pick him up.
On October 30, 2008 he began a local feature having fun with the history of Glen Ridge, New Jersey. A Smidge of Glen Ridge ran in the weekly Glen Ridge Voice until June 26, 2014. At which time he returned to Paris France.
He also began contributing editorial cartoons for The Voice’s sister newspaper (both part of the North Jersey Media Group) The Montclair Times beginning on January 12, 2012.
His 2014 return to Paris didn’t interrupt his contributions to the weekly Montclair newspaper. Creators says he continued supplying cartoons to The Tomes until last year (I can only trace him there to 2021).
He was in France when the horrible Charlie Hebdo massacre occurred.
The last couple years saw him self-syndicating his cartoons.
With Creators now taking care of distributing his cartoons Jon seems to have time for more drawing.
Aside: My local newspaper publishes Creators’ cartoons and columns and definitely leans to the right, so I’m looking forward to seeing an occasional Russo cartoon in print soon. Jon’s clean lines and uncluttered uncluttered layout are sure to show up better there than the muddied Ramirez editoons that are mostly fine for the internet – not so much for newsprint.
