Pat Oliphant lost his eyesight a few years ago, but his blue-green eyes still search my face when I sit beside him and introduce myself. He says I speak too fast and that I have an accent and that it’s from Texas. I correct him (not from Texas) and point out that he’s got one too.
Oliphant’s Australian accent is subtle, almost inaudible. The Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist was born in 1935 but has lived in the U.S. since 1964.
Ania Hull, of The Santa Fe New Mexican, recently went to visit famed editorial cartoonist Pat Oliphant.
Mr Oliphant gave his reaction to his winning the 1967 Pulitzer Prize for the cartoon above (after which he boycotted The Pulitzers), he says that Bill Mauldin drew the best cartoon of the second half of the 20th Century, he gives his opinion of Donald Trump (for adults only), and much more.
