Comic strips

Recent Funnies – Notes and Reactions

Always enjoy Robb Armstrong featuring Klondike Ike in JumpStart. For some reason I identify with Frank Cobb, maybe because I’m the only one in comics fandom who has a liking for the David Lettick version of Little Orphan Annie.

The most recent short, three strip, Klondike Ike sequence starts here.

Sticking with comic strips about comic strips we have Ray Billingsley’s Curtis featuring “Dear Ol’ Dad.”

Curtis’ point is illustrated by a letter to The Northwest Herald:

Who thinks “Speed Bump” is funny? I find it disgusting and in no way funny. How do you explain to a child the Wednesday, Sept. 25, cartoon? The Herald should be ashamed and embarrassed for publishing that trash!

Dave Coverly‘s offensive Speed Bump:

Then there is the problem of replacing an old favorite, even one in rerun status, with something new:

New comic doesn’t top ‘For Better Or For Worse’

To the Editor: What happened to the “For Better Or For Worse” comic strip in this morning’s paper? It is one of the best of the cartoons — maybe because it is so real life. This “Crabgrass” thing won’t cut it.

We mentioned that Dick Tracy has started a two week Minit Mysteries by Matthew K. Manning and Howie Noel. Manning’s script of Dick Tracy getting the assignment Monday took me back to the 1960s animated cartoon.

And Noel’s exaggerated sharp chin on Tracy? I love it! The Manning/Noel story began Sunday.

Is Stephen Webster disrespecting the House of Mouse in The Saga of Brann Bjornson?

Don’t want to get political with this post but…

For some reason reading recent installments of Rose is Rose and Barney & Clyde brought to mind Kari Lake and Dick Cheney respectively.

From Monday’s Comics Kingdom feed:

I liked the juxtaposition of Legend of Bill followed by Flash Gordon. Not about the stories, though I am enjoying that part of the strips too. but the pairing of the art just really appealed to my sense of aesthetics.

Monday’s Phoebe and Her Unicorn also appealed:

It appealed to my sense of humor. Dana Simpson gave me the laugh of the day – possibly the week.
