Wayback Whensday with Gilbert Shelton

By future Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers creator from late 1966 or early 1967, during the height of the Vietnam War, comes a comic of the times: “Everybody Seems To Be Going Over To Viet Nam,” a three page story by Gilbert Shelton and Tony Bell first seen in Wonder Wart-Hog #1 (Winter 1967). The story features some then-current comic strip characters in an approximation of their cartoonists’ drawing styles: The Green Berets (Joe Kubert), Buz Sawyer (Roy Crane), Sgt. Snorkel (Mort Walker), Steve Canyon (Milton Caniff), Smilin’ Jack (Zack Mosley), Snoopy The World War One Flying Ace (Charles Schulz), and Little Orphan Annie and Daddy Warbucks (Harold Gray).

The original art of the three page comic is up for auction until October 12/13 at Heritage Auctions.

Gilbert Shelton Wonder Wart-Hog #1 Complete 3-Page Story Original Art (Pete Millar Publishing, 1967). An early contribution to the underground comix movement, the Vietnam War-era short-story “Everybody seems to be going over to Viet Nam!” puts a unique twist on classic comic strips like Steve Canyon, Snoopy, Beetle Bailey, and Little Orphan Annie. The hilarious pre-Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers art is done in ink and Zipatone over blue pencil on thick Crescent illustration board with an image area of approximately 10″ x 13.25″. The lightly toned boards show slight handling and corner wear. In Very Good condition.

  1. WoW! I had that Wonder Warthog magazine. It was great! Unfortunately, I sold it years ago, but it’s nice to reminisce.
