Wayback Whensday: Walt Kelly’s Can’t & No!

Walt Kelly’s Can’t Record Storybook Cover and Story Page Original Art Group of 28 (1969)

Heritage Auctions has a preview of an upcoming lot by Walt Kelly for bid:

Walt Kelly, the genius behind Pogo, brings his whimsical charm to a delightful children’s story. Created for the 28-page storybook accompanying a 45-RPM vinyl record that tells the tale of Canterbury, an adorable goldfinch “with a wont to say CAN’T,” these 28 beautifully crafted illustrations vividly depict Canterbury’s birth, his first steps in life, and his encounters with beloved characters like Pogo, Wilbur, Captain Rabbit, and his own family. The irresistible cover is, of course, included! A joy to behold, each of the 28 illustrations is crafted in ink over blue pencil on a Bristol board measuring 11.5″ x 11.5″. The cover is rendered in ink over blue pencil as well, with the artist’s name featured on a stat paste-up at the top.

To get an idea of what the finished product would look like we turn to Thomas Haller Buchanan who posted a twin, Walt Kelly’s No!, from the same time (1969) and the same publisher (Lancelot Press).
