Comic strips Editorial cartooning Reuben

Reuben Awards After-Party (Catching Up)

Michael de Adder won the Divisional Reuben for Editorial Cartooning:

Thank you, National Cartoonist Society.

First, sorry I wasn’t there in person to receive this storied award. Last minute personal issues made it impossible to attend. I almost had the ticket in my hand before fate snatched it from my grasp.

Second, thanks for naming me Editorial Cartoonist of the Year for my work at the Washington Post.

Michael discusses the honor and presents his winning portfolio of eight Washington Post cartoons.

Andrews McMeel and GoComics celebrated the nominees and winners from their stable of cartoonists:

GoComics was well-represented at this year’s award show—13 of our talented creators were award finalists. Four of these creators were even nominated for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year: Will Henry (“Wallace the Brave”), Dana Simpson (“Phoebe and Her Unicorn”), Mark Tatulli (“Lio”), and Darrin Bell (“Rudy Park”).

Bill Hinds of “Tank McNamara” was honored with the Gold T-Square award for his 50 years as a professional cartoonist. Tauhid Bondia took home the Best Newspaper Comic Strip award for “Crabgrass”, while Sarah Anderson won Best Online Comics: Short Form for “Sarah’s Scribbles”. Wayno of “Waynovision” won best Newspaper Panel.

On X/Twitter Andrews McMeel and GoComics posted pictures of Sarah and Tauhid accepting their awards.

And while we did mention that it was Lynn Johnston announcing Hilary B. Price as Cartoonist of the Year, we should have noted that it was the first female winner of THE Reuben handing it to the sixth and latest woman to win it.

The National Cartoonists Society has set next year’s Reuben Awards and Conference about as far away from this year’s San Diego location as possible and still keep it in the contiguous United States.
