September 2024 will see two exhibits of illustrator Ralph Steadman‘s artwork opening.
Upcoming exhibition of Ralph Steadman works spans six decades of his prolific career Washington D.C. — “Ralph Steadman: And Another Thing,” on view Sept. 7 – Dec. 8 at the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center, spans more than 60 years of the artist’s life and artwork. The exhibition showcases Steadman’s legendary collaborations with maverick Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, his illustrated literary classics such as Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” and Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island,” the inventive books he authored such as “I, Leonardo” and “The Big I Am” and so much more.
The unprecedented exhibition showcases Steadman’s ongoing evolution. It features a selection of 149 original artworks as well as ephemera, including Steadman’s sketchbooks, children’s books, magazines, personal photographs and handwritten notes that tell a fuller story of how the artworks were born. From Steadman’s early years as a student to his political illustrations, social commentary and activism, this exhibition surveys Steadman’s nonstop creative passion and collaborations. Beautiful works from “The Gonzovation Trilogy,” his collaboration with documentarian and filmmaker Ceri Levy about extinct and endangered birds and animals, sit alongside his more experimental collections such as Paranoids, caricatures of notable figures from history, entertainment and politics that Steadman created by reworking Polaroid photographs.

An honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay is really all we wanted, and Jann Wenner, the editor of Rolling Stone, paid us OK, as did Scanlan’s.
My daughter Sadie recently found the original letters from Rolling Stone about the Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas commission.
It says: ‘We would be able to pay you $500 for this work, and would guarantee hospital care if such becomes necessary in the course of this assignment.’
That sum was raised to $750 when they increased the number of illustrations from the cover art to ten pages with three spot drawings.

I don’t think I have ever seen an illustrated edition of either of the “Alice in Wonderland” books that I didn’t enjoy but the Steadman books are—for my taste—mind-blowingly “better” than all the others.
