JD Crowe Wins 2024 Green Eyeshade Award

Southerners from the Society of Professional Journalists have announced the winners of The Green Eyeshade Awards. For the Editorial Cartooning JD Crowe of the Alabama Media Group took the #1 spot for his 2023 efforts.

Founded in 1950, the Society of Professional Journalists’ Green Eyeshade is the nation’s oldest regional journalism contest. It highlights the best journalism in North Carolina, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.

JD Crowe noted his win on his Facebook page with a group of cartoons that may be his submission:

Found out over the weekend that I won First Place in the Green Eyeshade Journalism Awards for a batch of cartoons titled “Drawing tough love in a red state.” Props to my friend and cartooning colleague Dennis Draughon for taking Third Place in the competition. I don’t do this work to win awards, but it’s a nice little surprise when it happens. Thanks to you all for your support – and for putting up with me.

Also honored were Second Place: Robert L. Ariail, 2023 Cartoons

and Third Place: Dennis Draughon, Editorial cartoons by Dennis Draughon for Capitol Broadcasting Co.

WRAL noted Draughon’s honor.

  1. JD’s work is something we can be proud of in a state that is frequently embarrassing.
