Garfield Evolves Again

Boom Studios released the “first look” at their forthcoming Garfield comic book series:

BOOM! Studios today revealed a first look at GARFIELD #1, the first issue in a new four-issue series about everyone’s favorite cat! Ryan Estrada (I Climbed Kilimanjaro) and Sarah Graley (Kim Reaper, Minecraft) pen two short stories in the first issue, joined by artist Axur Eneas (Princeless) and letterer Stef Purenins (Our Super Adventure), to bring Garfield to life of this can’t miss tie-in to the The Garfield Movie from Alcon Entertainment, available in August 2024.

Robert Wood at ScreenRant noted the changed look of the characters from previous print Garfield comics that hewed closely to the established comic strip look of Garfield and company:

The four-issue series is an anthology comic set in the world of 2024’s The Garfield Movie, starring Chris Pratt as the voice of Garfield. The first issue includes two stories, titled ‘Midnight Munchies’ and ‘Jon Minus Garfield.’ But perhaps the biggest news for fans is that the comic will bring the sardonic feline’s design from The Garfield Movie to the printed page, interpreting his CGI design through the eyes of various artists.

While Garfield’s movie design maintains the essential elements of his comic design, it also opted for smaller ears and more detailed take on the character’s markings and eyes (which are usually defined by a black line all around, but now merge into the snout when fully open.)

It is also noted that some cartoonists will be allowed to go even further from the Garfield comic strip model.

The syndicated comic strip Garfield will retain its current look as far as is known.

  1. Oh great, another thing for yutzes with too much time on their hands* to lose their minds about. (*I was about to write “boomers” but thought better of it as that generation certainly doesn’t have a monopoly on the whole “how DARE you change this random thing from my childhood” song and dance—just ask the average male Xer how he feels about “what they did to Transformers” or whatever.)

    1. The Transformers Wiki has a hilarious timeline. It starts with
      13,500,000,000 BCE
The Big Bang creates the universe as we know it. The protons, neutrons, and electrons that will eventually compose Transformers are formed, ruining it forever. A Thursday.

  2. The previous kaboom Garfield comics would have guest artists who drew Garfield and his friends in their own style as well. Some of them worked well, others weren’t as successful, but it was fun to see the different interpretations of Jim Davis’ characters.
