The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) has announced the recipients of the 2023 Sigma Delta Chi Awards for excellence in journalism. In the Editorial Cartooning categories the winners are Rob Rogers and Nancy Ohanian.
Rob Rogers for 40,000-Plus Circulation
“Rob Rogers whose sharp-edges insights drawn brilliantly distills the topics of the day into one eyeful”
Nancy Ohanian for Circulation Up To 40,000
“No words and a highly stylized collage style makes these cartoons more disturbing than amusing but no less engrossing, and even more powerful than many in the traditional style. Perhaps the art form needs more unique approaches like this one.”
The SPJ added a new category this year for graphic journalism which they categorize as Illustation.
Susie Cagle for In Harm’s Way from The Marshall Project.
“The long form comic is both a powerful and simple way to tell a story that could have floundered in the details.”
