Comic Strip Stuff – More or Less

The San Diego Comic Con has announced the nominees for its 2024 Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award which is usually for comic book artists/cartoonists and this year is no different, except…

Vincent Kings is one of the nominees for Time Dog and Other Fairy Tales, a comic book laid out as comic strip.

From The Watertown (upstate N.Y.) News:

James DeMarco grew up in Watertown and became a goaltender at age 5. It’s his life’s passion to stand between the pipes and keep the puck out of the net.

Combining this with the love of cartooning Small Saves emerged in 1991 and took on a life of his own. “To play goal – then come home and draw Small Saves — is my ideal definition of a good day.”

Small Saves is a weekly comic strip that has been around for over 30 years. It appears weekly in The Watertown News and in USA Hockey Magazine.

USA Hockey Magazine is published ten (10) times a year. Five (5) issues are published in a print format (September, October, November/December, January/February and March) and five (5) issues are published in a digital only format (April, May, June, July and August).

R. L. Crabb, who fills his weekly It Takes a Village Idiot space in The Grass Valley (Northern Calif.) Union alternating between comic strip and single panel commentary. Lately The Union has resorted to “classics”:

Hello friends, R.L. Crabb here. I’ve been under the weather and unable to keep up with my usual deadlines. Editor Elias has consented to run some of my “classic” cartoons from earlier times (the more things change, the more they stay the same). I won’t go into details but I am recovering and hope to be back at the drawing board next month. My wife Mary Ann has plenty of help, so please don’t inundate her with too much help. Thanks for all your support over the years.

We miss his comics (got ’em bookmarked) and wish R.L. a quick and full recovery.

The monthly Bazooka Joe and DC Comics team-up continues.

Comicbook.com reports:

Bazooka Joe and the crew have made themselves at home in the DC Universe thanks to Bazooka Bubble Gum’s delightful DC crossover comics, and now the Man of Steel is getting his proper introduction. Superman is the latest DC hero to join the Bazookaverse x DC hijinks, and previous comics have featured Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and Batman.

The Bazooka Joe/DC “comic strips” seem to be coming out one a month (the first was issued in March 2024).

Dirty Laundry – Webcomic Edition

Know Your Meme reports:

Begging Leftist Comic Artists To Stop Adding Unnecessary Text is a viral tweet that inspired a meme trend in webcomic and leftist communities on X / Twitter in late June 2024. The catchphrase and a red crossed-out version of a Haus of Decline comic was posted by X account @LinkofSunshine alongside a post commending conservative webcomic artist Stonetoss for his brevity. Haus of Decline’s assertion that they “straight up don’t like” @LinkofSunshine and don’t appreciate their critique led to a trend in which people posted crossed-out versions of webcomics alongside the phrase, “on my knees begging leftist comic artists to stop adding unnecessary text holy shit.”

Something more pleasant.

Two years ago, on Father’s Day 2022, Beware of Toddler debuted on Comics Kingdom. It brought the delightful and chaotic adventures of a stay-at-home dad and his energetic toddler to a broader audience. Since then, it has captured readers’ hearts everywhere, turning everyday parenting mishaps into hilarious and heartwarming moments.
