The Readers Sent Them A Letter

G. B. Trudeau has gone too far!

From The Oregonian:

… In our semi-free speech environment, Trudeau can say anything about Trump, which is fine. If you do not like what he writes, no one is forcing you to read his strip.

However, in the April 7 Doonesbury strip, in which Trudeau equates Trump to Jesus Christ, Trudeau has crossed the line. The strip is titled “The last dinner party.” This is an offense – an outrage – to all Catholics and Christians.

Another reader responds in The Oregonian letters section:

A reader was offended by a recent Doonesbury cartoon in which Donald Trump replaced Jesus in cartoonist Garry Trudeau’s version of The Last Supper, (“Readers respond: Comic strip crossed the line,” April 14). Yet Trump has many times equated himself with Christ. He and his supporters bombard us with images suggesting Trump has been appointed by the savior himself to lead the American people.

and this:

After reading the letter criticizing “The last dinner party” Doonesbury comic strip, what saddens me is that people in this country listen to and believe the comic strip that is Donald Trump, (“Readers respond: Comic strip crossed the line,” April 14). That’s a comic strip that should be discontinued…

Clay Bennett Goes Too Far!

From The Chattanooga Times Free Press (scroll waaay down):

I am strongly opposed to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene…

That said, I object strongly to the cartoon on the left side of the editorial page of the April 17 edition of this paper, which depicts Ms. Greene as vomiting green bile. This comes as close to a vulgar, personal attack as possible without actually being one. It is degrading and wrong, and it does nothing to advance political discourse.

… humiliating and vulgar assaults on her or anyone else, like that cartoon, should not be tolerated.

Hopefully, we who oppose her are better than this.

Dana Summers Has It All Wrong

From a few Baltimore Sun readers:

The political cartoon in The Sun on April 11 (“Orange man bad“) provided yet another opportunity to step through that Republican-looking glass, where every accusation is an admission and every slander is a confession…

… The problem here is that the Republican list is a catalog of aggravating grievances, not party platform points. The Republican Party explicitly and determinedly has no platform…

and:

I am very very upset with the cartoon showing the Republican platform of border, economy, crime, energy, Russia, China, Education, etc. vs. the Democratic platform of “Orange man bad.” That cartoon couldn’t have been more wrong. What legislation has the Republican Congress passed on any of these issues in the past years?

and more:

not done yet:

What a misleading political cartoon, portraying the Republicans as somehow the “serious” party and Democrats as simply reacting to Donald Trump (the twice-impeached, four-times-indicted, held-liable sex offender). Apparently the cartoonist hasn’t been paying attention to the clown show…

Steve Breen Steps Over The Line

From The Winchester Star:

The April 12 political cartoon by Steve Breen is horribly insensitive to the situation in Baltimore. I realize the point of it was totally different, but the means for making that point was thoughtless…

… You can do better, and cartoonist Breen can be more thoughtful.

  1. “I am Very Upset”, “Insensitive”, “Misleading”

Er, um, it’s a cartoon. Americans have lost perspective, and are reduced to getting upset by … nothing. When you are “offended” (or any other choice words found in the Roget’s Thesaurus to describe that emotion), exactly what happens ? Do you suddenly break out in hives ? Do you suddenly experience leprosy ? Are you rendered mute ? Does all your hair fall out ?

No. Nothing happens, except self-generated emotion. Do you get this worked up about real issues, like famine, war, crimes committed, birth defects, or anything else related to humanity ? No. Nothing but emotion is all that happens. Has it ever occurred to all the offended people that NOBODY CARES ? By all means experience whatever you want to experience, but leave me out of it.

    1. Not the best place to argue that cartoons don’t matter.
