Comic strips Interviews

Patrick McDonnell, Guard Dog Guardian (Also: Meet Krazy Kat)

From Patrick McDonnell’s Mutts blog:

Have you seen? Sparky (formerly known as Guard Dog) is the cover story for the March 2024 issue of Animal Culture magazine! For the article, writers Patricia Denys and Mary Holmes interviewed Patrick about his Guard Dog freedom story and the plight of real-life tethered dogs.

The article, titled “Guard Dog’s Guardian: The Work of Patrick McDonnell” discusses Patrick’s journey of becoming a cartoonist and the profound influence that Peanuts creator Charles Schulz had on his work. The piece also includes tips from PETA about how to help real dogs like Sparky.

The interview with cartoonist Patrick McDonnell about his comic strip Mutts is the major part of what turns out to be a bit of an Animal Culture comics edition. The issue also has a review of McDonnell’s Me…Jane book and a six page article by McDonnell interviewer Mary Holmes about comic art influencer George Herriman and Krazy Kat.

The entire issue is available as a free pdf here.

Don’t miss the back cover – a wonderful contrast to the front cover.

  1. What a wonderful gift to all of us. I can’t wait to read this.
The MUTTS Guard Dog rescue story arc was incredibly moving. The best thing about it is that it encourages people to adopt locally sourced rescues. I do not see any reason to import rescued animals from other countries when there are loving friends in your own home town.
It is impossible to calculate the influence Charles M. Schulz has had on everyone who came after him. The man was a Titan, one who worked for the good.
Thank you, Sparky. Thank you, Patrick. Thank you, Sparky.
