Cathy the Cartoonist, Cathy the Comic Strip
Skip to commentsThe Dayton Daily News a couple days ago:
For more than three decades beginning in the mid-1970s, Dayton-born cartoonist Cathy Guisewite entertained millions with her comic strip “Cathy.”
Her recent birthday caused us to go into the archives to share more about her story.
The Daily Cartoonist has another reason as the Daily News story is dated September 8, the day the National Cartoonists Society handed out their 77th annual Reuben Awards this year and Cathy Guisewite was one of only two women cartoonists to win The Reuben as Cartoonist of the Year in the first 67 years of the Award.
Back to The Daily News profile of local girl making good:
“Cathy” ran in newspapers 365 days a year from 1976 to 2010. At its peak, the comic strip was syndicated in 1,400 newspapers, and it was compiled into more than 20 books.
Her comic strip was featured in the Dayton Daily News during all of its 34 years.
“To know that my work was being delivered to Dayton homes meant so much to me,” she once said.
Above is the first Cathy, below is the last Cathy. The archives can be read at GoComics or in print.
Guisewite was inducted into the Dayton Walk of Fame in 2017.
