Mt. Pleasant 2021 – 2023

Mt. Pleasant by Rick McKee and Kent Sligh has ended.

Cartoonist Rick McKee notified readers Monday on the GoComics site:

Yes, unfortunately, this is the end here. We began Mt. Pleasant two years ago in what was already a challenging newspaper market, with very limited space available for new comics. We knew it would be difficult, and while we have had some success, we don’t see the newspaper market improving — quite the opposite. So, we regret that we’re ending Mt. Pleasant as a daily comic feature, but hope to revisit these characters and this world in another format. We sincerely appreciate all the love and support you have shown us here! — Rick and Kent

The comic strip first appeared in print on Sunday January 3, 2021 in The Chicago Tribune and the Newport News Daily Press and last in the same papers on February 26, 2023.*

The McClatchy newspaper group ran the Sunday strip beginning March 7, 2021 (until the end?).

It ran online from Friday, January 1, 2021 to Tuesday, February 28, 2023.

(I have not found a newspaper running the daily version in print.)

The Orlando Sentinel ran the strip (dailies only) from November 14, 2021 until February 28, 2023.

Mt. Pleasant was available for reading online at Tribune Content Agency through January 2023, at GoComics through today, and at The Augusta Press website.

Rick McKee continues as an editorial cartoonist and the cartoonist of Pluggers.

Kent Sligh’s current projects are a bit of a mystery.

  1. Bummer, this was (is) a great strip

    1. Thank you, Will. That’s high praise.

  2. I wonder why they just don’t run it online like so many comics these days. It’s there at GoComics already, why not just keep it there online?

    1. They very well might let it stay there. I’m not sure how that works.

      1. Boy I sure hope so ! I missed a lot from the beginning !

  3. The Orlando Sentinel ran the daily strip of Mt. Pleasant.

    1. Thanks Darryl, the entry has been updated.

      1. I also know the Gary, Indiana Post Tribune and Illinois Southtown (owned by Tribune Pulishing) carried Mt. Pleasant in its daily comics, but as of this week Bound and Gagged replaced Mt. Pleasant.

  4. Double bummer. The Mt. Pleasant archive has disappeared. I was looking forward to reading the comic strips I missed. ?

      1. And I don’t have to subscribe? Thank you! Let’s hope the removal of the Mt. Pleasant archive from GoComics was the first step in finding it a new home.

    1. GoComics blames the removal of the Mt Pleasant archive on Tribune Media. They say Tribune Media pulled down the archive most likely due to a contract issue with the feature. It was not a GoComics decision. Boo, Tribune Media, boo.
