Comic strips Newspaper industry Syndicates

Citrus County Chronicle Changes Comics Codex

The Citrus County (Crystal River, Fl.) Chronicle recently changed the comics lineup of both the daily page and the Sunday supplement, apparently without warning.

From today’s Chronicle:

  • I’m wondering who decides which comic strips are taken off out of the Sunday paper. “Prince Valiant,” which we have been reading for years and years and years, has not been in the paper and I would like to know why. Please return “Prince Valiant.”
  • My hope is that the Chronicle would bring back “Big Nate,” the comic strip. That little guy put a smile on my face every single day. He was quite a little squirt and ornery, but so funny. Please bring back “Big Nate.”
  • I just want to say I’m very disappointed the way you changed your comics in your newspaper. I liked the paper very much, except how you changed those. That’s 75% of the reason I take your paper. So, hopefully you’ll change back and go back to the original comics. I know there’s a lot more people out there that I know that feel the same way.

Editorial opinion: Any paper that drops Prince Valiant deserves to be shamed.

Despite that Prince Val drop King Features is the overall winner in the replacement sweeps.

The old six page section (above) has been replaced with a four page section (below),
and from some of the comments I infer that they have gone to the modern 11″ wide page.

The new-to-Sunday comic strips are Baby Blues, Mutts, Funky Winkerbean, Zits, Fort Knox, Bizarro, Dustin, and Mother Goose and Grimm.

To make room they dropped Peanuts, Marvin, Andy Capp, Prince Valiant, Big Nate, Luann, and Barney Google and Snuffy Smith.

The strips that survived the switch are Dilbert, Slylock Fox, Garfield, Beetle Bailey, Sally Forth, The Family Circus, Pickles, B.C., Dennis the Menace, Curtis, Hagar the Horrible, Wizard of Id, Blondie, Hi and Lois, and The Lockhorns.

As for the daily comics page…

The daily page saw Peanuts, For Better or For Worse, The Grizzwells, The Born Loser, Moderately Confused, Rubes, Doonesbury Flashback, Betty, Big Nate, Frank and Ernest, and Arlo and Janis dropped.

Added daily are Hi and Lois, Baby Blues, B.C., Curtis, Wizard of Id, Zits, Hagar the Horrible, Mother Goose and Grimm, Fort Knox, and Mutts.

Daily survivors are Garfield, Pickles, Sally Forth, Beetle Bailey, Dilbert, Dennis the Menace, Blondie, and The Family Circus.

My scoreboard shows a net gain of 11 for King Features Syndicate,
and a net loss of 13 for Andrews McMeel Syndication.
Creators Syndicate washed with two lost and two gained,
while the Washington Post Writers Group gained two (Fort Knox daily and Fort Knox Sunday).

The dailies lost one, the Sundays gained one.

Herman, in the classifieds, abides.

  1. Have you ever thought of upgrading to WordPress or something where if you click on the small images, they enlarge and we can actually see and read them?

    Asking for a friend.

    Thanks.

    Jim

  2. Jim, the images here are more for a “proof of purchase” source rather than for an entertainment read. If you follow the “From today’s Chronicle” link it will take you to the paper’s site where PDFs of the paper can be downloaded and the Chronicle’s funny pages can be read at the size of your choosing.
By the way, this is a WordPress system, check the previous Pearls Before Swine item and click on any of those comics.
Or the banners at the top of this post.

  3. Also regarding the comic page….
Now you have moved the sudoku puzzle off the comic page.
Just add it to the indexOr put it ba the crossword so we can find it.
