Statues and Watches and Dolls, Oh My!

A Weekend Whatnot post.

Nestled on the east banks of the Mississippi River south of Kaskaskia Island, not too far from Missouri’s wine country, sits the small town of Chester, Illinois.

Chester is the hometown of one of the country’s most legendary cultural figures, Popeye the Sailor Man — both figuratively and literally.

The Alton (Ill.) Telegraph, a Hearst newspaper, highlights the ongoing efforts
of E. C. Segar’s birthplace to celebrate the comic creations of their native son.

A new Popeye character statue has been erected every year since 2006. Wimpy came first, followed by a full depiction of Popeye’s family, Olive Oyl, Swee’ Pea and Jeep.

Just a few weeks ago, the statue of Harold Hamgravy, Olive Oyl’s love interest before Popeye, was revealed. A statue of Oscar is expected in 2022.

The article includes an online gallery of the statues.

“The Gent and New Gent glass and case are made from biosourced materials, while the silicone bracelet on each watch features the Peanuts logo on the loop. Each style comes in a specially designed packaging, and those fans collecting all six watches can get their hands on a bespoke frame to display all the watches together.
