Notice from The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
This Labor Day weekend only, we are combining our Sunday and Monday print editions into a singular newspaper that will be delivered on Sunday, Sept. 5.
The newspaper delivered Sunday will cover both Sept. 5 and 6. No separate edition will be delivered Monday, Sept. 6.
Anticipating questions the newspaper gets in front of their readers:
Where will the Monday comics and puzzles appear?
We are supplying our subscribers with access to their Monday comics and puzzles through the e-edition, which will post early Monday morning.
But the paper(s) show a bit of favoritism toward the puzzle fans:
We will also be publishing Monday’s sudoku and crossword in Tuesday’s print edition.
Additionally, the Sunday edition will carry extra puzzles.
Between the Sunday and Tuesday editions puzzlers won’t miss out, and neither will comic creators and syndicates (features are not purchased on a daily basis). However comic strip fans will not be able to get a tearsheet to stick on their refrigerator, desk, or checkout register.
And it is not just Milwaukee’s Journal Sentinel.
It seems all the Gannett newspapers in Wisconsin have the same notice.
The Mantiwoc Herald Times Reporter; The Sheboygan Press; The Wausau Daily Herald;
The Appleton Post-Crescent; The Fond du Lac Reporter; The Marshfield News Herald;
The Green Bay Press-Gazette; The Wisconsin Rapids Tribune; and The Stevens Point Journal.
Leaving The Oshkosh Northwestern the only Wisconsin Gannett paper where we didn’t find the notice.
Do these newspapers all have the same publisher/editor-in-chief?
Will this disease spread to other Gannett papers as the weekend editions begin appearing?
A spotty search of Gannett papers finds The Columbus Dispatch also running the notice.
The Gannett paper in Rochester NY (Democrat and Chronicle) offers a similar “deal”: No Monday paper, e-edition available online (with comics, puzzles, and games); Monday’s crossword and Sudoku appearing in Tuesday’s paper.
For the last several weeks Sunday’s paper has included a page of additional word and math/logic puzzles.
The Massillon Independent and The Canton Repository,
both Ohio and both Gannett, can be added to the list.
The Cincinnati E—-r Des Moines Register Courier Journal in Louisville KYThs Tennessean The El Paso Times The Argus LeDer (Sioux Falls SD,)are among those publishing combined editions today. They have the same graphics and message saying they won’t be published tomorrow but will publish Tuesday.
Ironically, the Gannett owned Detroit Free Press apparently will publish tomorrow.
