Utah Delegation Condemns Pat Bagley Cartoon

The Utah congressional delegation (Sens. Mitt Romney and Mike Lee and Reps. Blake Moore, Chris Stewart and John Curtis) made it plain they are not happy with a Pat Bagley cartoon that poked at fellow Utah Congressman Burgess Owens.

Pat compared Rep. Owens recent comments at the U.S. southern border to remarks from the past.

Mr Owens registered his own displeasure with the cartoon:

We have heard of “mansplaining” now we have “whitesplaining” from a white man comparing a black man, who grew up under Jim Crow laws, to the KKK. Awful tone deaf  @sltrib  @Patbagley. Expect an apology but I won’t hold my breathe.  The Daily Caller carries the conservative viewpoint.

The Daily Caller covers the conservative side of the story.

KUTV (Salt Lake City) carries the controversy with background putting the cartoon in context,
including a quote from Pat:

Bagley, who has been with the Tribune for more than 40 years, responded to Owens in a tweet of his own, writing that “I can’t speak to the Black experience (obviously). But I can speak to the effect the works @RepBurgessOwens used have on White people. From time immemorial they have been used to stir up irrational fear and animosity.”

Pat has mentioned the conservative backlash on his Twitter feed:

How does it feel to have the entire RW lie machine pile on? Terrible. They’re appealing to people who resort to violence as a “solution”. But there is power in truth. Going to make the entire Utah Congressional delegation (plus paid staff) own Burgess’s comments 1/

  1. Important to note what Burgess said:

“We are seeing every single day, people coming here and within hours getting on a train or a plane and going to your neighborhood. So, no Americans, this isn’t a border issue anymore. They are coming to your neighborhoods, not knowing the language, not knowing the culture, and there is a cartel influence along the way. So be aware, don’t think this is a distance from you now, this is coming your way and it is done on purpose by a party who could care less about we the people.”

But, he insists, and his pals agree, that’s not in the least racist.

  2. “But enough about Q-Anon…”
