Reign Ends for New Adventures of Queen Victoria
Skip to commentsOne hundred and twenty years after the original Queen Victoria’s reign passed into history,
The New Adventures of Queen Victoria comes to an end.
February 14, 2021 will be the last installment.
Shutting down the strip is the choice of creator Pab Sungenis and not part of the GoComics culling, as explained by Pab in a November 2020 note to readers:
Some of you who have been watching the calendar know that in February, the strip will be celebrating its 15th anniversary…
So, after long thought and contemplation, I decided that 15 years is long enough to do anything.
The strip will reach its 15th anniversary on Monday, February 8th, and the following Sunday, February 14, will be its last installment.
I’ve discussed this with my reps at the Syndicate, and while they are sorry to see the strip go, they understand my reasoning and support the decision. I want to emphasize that the decision to end the strip is mine and mine alone. I am not being pressured off the page or censored or anything like that. It’s just that the time has finally come to end the strip…
As Pab says the webcomic began on February 8, 2006 (above, full archive on GoComics) and became very popular. The New Adventures of Queen Victoria has a Wikipedia page where the history of the strip can be read. The Wiki page includes a “controversies” section which includes, among other things:
In July 2007, in response to the Supreme Court’s overturning of anti-segregation laws in Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District No. 1, which Sungenis compared to overturning Brown v. Board of Education, the strip “segregated” itself into two separate strips — a “white” strip above a “black” one which was represented by showing characters and text in photo-negative on a black background.
Pab was not above pointing a self-deprecating finger at himself, especially his use of clip art that makes up the visual imagery of the comic strip. At one point Pab was laid up…
From that note to fans linked above:
At this point, no decision has been made on whether or not the strip will continue in reruns. If you want to see the reruns, let the GoComics people know. As for my future, I do have some ideas for new strips, but will wait until an artist comes along for me to work with. The Fumetti days are over.
Thank you all for 15 years of fun.
