Sacramento artist Emilio Soltero gives an online Comic-Con drawing lesson.
Sacramento artist Emilio Soltero will give a free presentation on figure drawing July 25 at 5 p.m. during an online version of the San Diego Comic-Con.
Soltero got his Ph.D. at UC Davis, where he studied using art to teach literacy, including through graphic novels. He has taught art at various colleges as well as at the Crocker Art Museum and currently teaches art to at-risk kids in the Sacramento area.
This Sacramento Bee article about drawing lessons would normally fly past my radar, but…
“[Emilio Soltero] contributed to [Morrie] Turner’s “Wee Pals” comic strip in The Sacramento Bee”
That gives us a new name to add to comic strip contributors. Above are a couple “Soul Corner” panels from 2006 with Emilio assisting and signing.

1918 Epidemic Cartoons from The Syracuse Herald
We wondered if we could find old cartoons from our archives from the Spanish Influenza epidemic in 1918 and see if the themes in them were relatable to today’s coronavirus pandemic.
Syracuse.com looks back at some 1918 cartoons.
For more, Paul Berge’s Saturday flashback has covered this.
Drifting…
In what is perhaps the biggest surprise in publishing since the Covid-19 pandemic began roiling the U.S. economy this spring, unit sales of print books in the first half of 2020 were up 2.8% over the same period in 2019 at outlets the report to NPD BookScan. The number of copies sold was 322.1 million in the first six months, up from 313.5 million in the first half of last year.
Publishers Weekly reports on increasing book sales.

The Other Alison Bechdel Comics
“Fun Home” and “Dykes to Watch Out For” are famous Alison Bechdel comix, but not the only ones.
However, by 1993, Bechdel’s success with the strip also carried a bit of an expectation about her work. In other words, what people wanted from her was Dykes to Watch Out For. Thus, it was such a great coincidence when Andy Mangels, editor of Gay Comics, contacted Bechdel about doing an all-Bechdel spotlight issue of the series. She assumed he wanted her to do some Dykes to Watch Out For stuff, while he was specifically looking for stuff OTHER than Dykes to Watch Out For. Bechdel was thrilled, and the result was Gay Comics #19 in 1993, which included three new, autobiographical stories, as well as reprints of another Bechdel comic strip.
Brian Cronin, at Comic Book Resources, takes a look at Gay Comix #19.
