The 2019 Locher Memorial Award winner is Chelsea Saunders!
The John Locher Memorial Award is a contest for aspiring cartoonists, ages 18-25, whose work demonstrates both clear opinions and strong artistry on political and social topics. Single panel, multi-panel, and animated editorial cartoons and comics will be accepted. Both students and non-students are eligible to submit.
Chelsea Saunders is an emerging freelance illustrator residing in New York, whose work focuses primarily on editorial illustration and animation. Her work has been featured on The Nib, Topic.com, and in Current Affairs Magazine.
The judges wrote:
“Saunders uses clever formats, strong artistry, and a confident style to tell well-paced stories of crimes suffered by America’s minority communities.”

The Locher Memorial Award announcement.
The prestigious award includes a $1,000 cash prize and an all-expense-paid trip to the annual convention of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists.
Chelsea will be a guest of honor of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists at their annual convention in Columbus, Ohio September 26-29, 2019 (in association with CXC).
