Cartooning Awards with January Deadlines

 

Here are just SOME of the cartooning awards and details on submissions and deadlines.
After easy holiday days it is time to get frantic if planning to enter some of these.

 

The Jay Kennedy Memorial Scholarship

DEADLINE: ENTRIES MUST BE POSTMARKED BY JANUARY 7, 2019

Only days left to enter this scholarship given to the cartoonist judged the best college cartoonist.

Applicants must be students at a 4-year college in the United States, Canada or Mexico who will be a Junior or Senior during the 2019-2020 academic year. Applicants do not have to be art majors to be eligible for this scholarship.

National Cartoonist Society Divisional Awards

The NCS Divisional Awards, with a couple new categories, are  judged from entries received
(The Reuben Award has a different standard).

Not much time left to apply to these either.

Submissions must be delivered to their respective locations by January 15, 2019

Some guidelines:

The regional NCS chapters will jury the following divisions: Newspaper Panel;, Newspaper Strip, Gag Cartoon, Editorial Cartoons and the all-new Variety Entertainment division! (Variety Entertainment is defined as any newspaper, magazine, or online cartoon feature that contains puzzles, games, activities, trivia, history, or instruction.)

The following divisions will be juried by specialty juries due to the length and/or complexity of the work being considered: Book Illustration, Magazine/Newspaper Illustration, Greeting Cards, Comic Books, Graphic Novels, Advertising/Product Illustration, Online Comics – Short Form, Online Comics – Long Form, Feature Animation, Television Animation and the all-new Online Animation division! (Online Animation is defined as any animated cartoon that was shown for the first time online, not on television or in a theater.)

National Newspaper Awards (Canada)

Deadline: January 15, 2019

Open to cartoons appearing in daily Canadian newspapers (or their online editions) in 2018. Entry fee: $40

 

 

The Pulitzer Prize

Deadline: January 25, 2019
Rules and entry form available online: http://www.pulitzer.org
Awarded for a distinguished cartoon or portfolio published during 2018. $75 entry fee. Please check the Pulitzer web site for updated guidelines.

 

 

 

The Best Cartoon Award (formerly the Thomas Nast Award)

Deadline: January 30, 2019
Rules and entry form available online: http://www.opcofamerica.org/
Annual awards from the Overseas Press Club of America for best cartoons on international affairs published during 2018 in a U.S.-based publication or for a U.S.-based audience. $200 entry fee. (And yes, the OPC dropped “Thomas Nast” from the name of the award See the announcement here.)

UPDATE — Finally recognizing that their entry fee may be too high, for the first time OCPA is offering “submissions subsidizes” for freelancers. Organizer Patricia Kranz noted, “If it is difficult for you to pay the full $200 entry fee, contact patricia@opcofamerica.org for information about financial help.”

The Herblock Prize

Deadline: February 1, 2019
Rules and entry form available online: http://www.herbblockfoundation.org
Open to newspaper, magazine, syndicate or wire service cartoonists for work published in 2018 in the U.S. or its territories, or in foreign editions of U.S.-based publications. No entry fee.

 

 

 

National Headliner Awards

Deadline: Deadline: Feb. 1, 2019
Rules and entry form available online: www.headlinerawards.org/entry/
Headliner competition is open to all material appearing in a paid-circulation publication or broadcast in the United States in 2018. Registration fee of $75 per entry. All entries must be submitted online.

 

 

 

Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award
Deadline: February 1, 2019
Rules and entry form available online: https://rfkhumanrights.org/awards/book-journalism-awards
The RFK awards honor outstanding coverage of human rights and social justice issues, and the power of individual action in the United States and around the world, for work published in 2018. $75 fee required for each entry.

Not an award, but a reminder that if you’re interested in getting a table for the
NCS Fest on Reuben’s weekend the deadline for that is the end of this month.
