Dana Simpson launches Phoebe and Her Unicorn with Universal Uclick

Today marks the launch Dana Simposon’s comic strip Phoebe and Her Unicorn through Universal Uclick. The strip is enjoying a popular launch with over 100 publications. Dana was winner of the Amazon.com and Andrews McMeel Publishing Comic Strip Superstar contest in 2009 with the comic strip Girl. The prize for that contest was a book publishing deal and a comic development contract. Since then, Girl became the foundation for a strip Dana developed called Heavenly Nostrils about Phoebe and her best friend and unicorn Marigold. The strip hit Gocomics in 2012 and has been consistently popular. A book collection of the strip was pubulished last September called Phoebe and Her Unicorn.

Dana lives in the Seattle. She attended Evergreen State College where she was a finalist for the Scripps-Howard Charles M. Schulz College Cartoonist Award. She also created a web comic called Ozy and Millie that ran for 10 years.

Congratulations Dana for the strong launch.

  1. Nice to see a quality strip get a great launch.

  2. Since P&HU’s launch is 100 newspapers, the Chicago Tribune hasn’t picked up this now in newspaper strip for now.

  3. Congratulations, Dana! In this market, that’s one hell of a launch!

  4. I wonder if the fact that Get Fuzzy was in reruns had anything to do with the number of papers willing to take on something new? If Get Fuzzy was still producing new material, I doubt if editors would have been such an easy sell.

As for Peanuts, it’ll probably take years before editors let that slot go, particularly since it’s new to a new generation of readers (so it’s not reruns for everyone.)
