Controversies Conventions Legal

Salt Lake and San Diego comic cons to talk about settling lawsuit out of courts

Salt Lake Comic Con

The legal fight between San Diego Comic-Con and Salt Lake Comic Con took another step forward – and hints at a possible settlement. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the Salt Lake Comic Con filed their official response to San Diego’s lawsuit asserting that “comic con” (no dash) is generic term and used by several other conventions. The same article reports that the two organizations have agreed to meet about a possible settlement. The date is scheduled for Oct. 27.

I’m not a lawyer and I have obvious bias toward my local comic con here in Salt Lake, but I think they (SLCC) has the stronger case. That SDCC is agreeing to settle tells me that there’s enough legal uncertainty that they’re not going to risk it going to a jury.
