Cal Grondahl let go from Standard-Examiner

I’m disappointed anytime an editorial cartoonist loses their staff job, but this weekend the news was extra sensitive. Pat Bagley texted me on Friday alerting me that Ogden’s Standard-Examiner had let go their editorial cartoonist Cal Grondahl. Cal is an institution not just for the Ogden daily, but Utah as well. I’ve known Cal since the mid-nineties – he’s a fixture in our local cartoonist gatherings.

As I posted on Facebook, “Cal is the founding father of Utah and Mormon cartooning. His wit and art were unapproachable by most of us who picked up the pen and followed suit.”

The Salt Lake Tribune has more details about Cal’s career, influence and now early-retirement. He was two years shy of retirement and had a 27 year career with the Standard-Examiner.

  1. Really sad. I grew up reading the Standard-Examiner and seeing his work. Hopefully he’ll keep it up and find other sources of income.
