Despicable Me 2 was the top 4th of July weekend flick

I took in Despicable Me 2 last Wednesday. So did a lot of other folks. The animated sequel was the top feature film for the five-day Fourth of July weekend taking in an estimated $142.1 million. As a comparison, Toy Story 3 took in $141 million its opening weekend.
As far as my thoughts on the movie, it was a good solid sequel. Almost as good as the original. In the first film, I thought the minion characters were awesome and they should have had more screen time. In this film, I felt like they were too much. Overall the kids thought it was great and I came out satisfied it was worthy my movie money.
Other comic related films of interest:
- The Lone Ranger debuted this weekend as well. It did not fair well taking in only $48.9 million. It cost over $200 million to make. Doesn’t take a math genius to figure out that Disney is going to take a bath on this film.
- Monsters University is still in the top five after three weekends.
- Man of Steel is slips to number seven after four weeks in theaters.
Box Office Mojo breaks down the numbers if you’re interested.
