Albany Times Union editorial cartoonist John de Rosier has announced on Facebook that he is being laid off from the paper. He’s been their staff cartoonist since 1999.
In a comment by John posted on Daryl Cagle’s site, John writes:
“Currently, the Times Union is building a new press, so I think many employees were thinking that, although finances are tight – as they are with the entire industry, perhaps the worst was behind us, especially following a much larger layoff several years ago,” de Rosier said. “Now it’s time for new directions, and I really do see that for the huge opportunity that it is. I am confident that great things await.”
Daryl notes that a photographer was also laid off.
Previous to the Times Union, John was the cartoonist for the Mobile Register in Mobile, AL. and won the Charles M. Schulz Award for outstanding college cartoonist while he was at Brigham Young University.
WOW- when THE state capital newspaper dumps their toonist….that’s proof that there’s no more high ground.
John, if you see this, good luck to you, and I’m very sorry to hear this. Those of us who have been through this know the road ahead has lots of challenges, but also lots of new opportunities to explore.
