Robert Ariail honored by SC Arts commission

Former The State editorial cartoonist Robert Ariail has been honored by the The South Carolina Arts Commission with the 2012 Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Governor’s Award for the Arts. The award is given to “recognize outstanding achievement and contributions to the arts in South Carolina” and is the highest award bestowed by the state.

Robert has a won many awards over his career including a twice Pulitzer Prize finalist, Overseas Press Club, National Headliner and SPJ’s Sigma Delta Chi Award.

Robert speaking of his work: “I try to give my readers a chuckle, perhaps even a guffaw on occasion. I’d even settle for a raised eyebrow,” says Ariail. “I don’t take cheap shots, but I like to make a point. I want my cartoons to say something, or at least to show the irony of a situation.”
