NCS announces nominees for Cartoonist of the Year

The National Cartoonists Society has announced the nominations for the 2011 Reuben Award for Cartoonist of the Year. The nominees are Pickles creator Brian Crane, Pearls Before Swine creator Stephan Pastis and MAD Magazine cartoonist Tom Richmond.

Brian’s strip has been in syndication since 1990 and this week Washington Post Writers Group announced that the strip was not in 800 newspapers. Pickles was nominated for Best Newspaper Comic Strip by the National Cartoonists Society in 1995 and 2001 and won award in 2001.

Stephan’s strip has been in papers since 2001 and was named Best Comic Strip in 2003 and 2006. He was nominated for this is his fourth nomination for this award.

Tom is a freelance humorous illustrator, cartoonist and caricaturist best known for his contributions to MAD Magazine. He has won divisional awards for Advertising Art in 2003, 2006 and 2007, and for Newspaper Illustration in 2009.

The winner will be announced on May 26th at the annual NCS Reuben Awards dinner in Las Vegas, NV.
