Jay Kennedy Scholarship deadline: December 15

College students with an interest and passion for cartooning please take note. The Jay Kennedy Scholarship application deadline is December 15. The annual Jay Kennedy Scholarship is awarded to a Junior or Senior enrolled in a 4-year college in North America who demonstrates talent and ambition in cartooning. The student doesn’t need to be an art major to be considered.

In addition to the application, a portfolio is also required. See National Cartoonists Society Foundation website for details.

  1. I wish this were not limited to 4-yr college students. I went back to college late in life ( I was 45). I went to my local community college. I’ve been drawing editorial toons for papers across my home state of South Carolina for 7-8 years. This past year I won the NATIONAL AWARD from the Society of Professional Journalists in editorial cartooning- 2 yr college category. This particular scholarship could have enabled me to go on to a 4-yr school and get another degree. ( I graduated top in my class ‘with honors’ and held a perfect 4.0 GPA every semester).
Not being able to afford to go on to more schooling…..I promptly set out to feed my family.
There are MANY, MANY students in 2-yr colleges who could really benefit from this schollie. Some are way better than students at 4-yr schools. Why the restriction? Why not open it up to ALL college students? As the saying goes….the cream always rises to the top. Nobody ever said it depended on which cow it comes from.
