On Sunday, September 11, more than 90 syndicated cartoonist will dedicate their features to pay homage to those who lost their lives or or were injured in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This year is the 10th anniversary of the attacks in New York City, Washington DC and Pennsylvania. The themes will feature a wide range of responses from patriotic to deeply emotional. King Features is spearheading the project which also includes Creators Syndicate, Tribune Media Services, Universal Press Syndicate and Washington Post Writers Group. You’ll be able to see all the strips on a special website CartoonistsRemember911.com.
Brendan Burford, Comics Editor at King Features Syndicate says, “We value the opportunity for the artists to use the comic platform to make a powerful, cohesive statement. It’s important that no one forget what happened on that day in history.”
After the Sunday run, 15 original works will be on display at five different museums across the country including The Newseum in Washington, D.C., The Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco, The Toonseum in Pittsburgh, The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art in New York City (MoCCA) and The Society of Illustrators in New York City.

Can amateurs submit strips for consideration? I was so inspired that I wrote 9-11 tributes for both of my strips Just Say Cheese and Charmy’s Army. I am inking them tonight and they will run on my various outlets (Comics Sherpa, GoComics, Comics Showcase, Charmy’s Blog, Fug Cheese’s Blog, and Space Bikini) on September 11th.
I can bet getting into this elete group for the tribute is a long shot. Is there any other tributes for strips that an amateur can get involved with?
This is a great thing you are all doing.
Jim Davis’ Garfield isn’t going to take part in this?
Garfield is too lazy to take part of anything except eating.
I will gladly take his place! I am not lazy.. but I do eat a lot.
This is the first I’ve heard of this. Bummed that whatever method of communication was used somehow missed me.
You were playing golf.
I bet with all these cartoons, no one will forget that it’s the 10 year anniversary of 9-11.
Bill, they’re just waiting to tell you about it until about the time you’d start working on it.
Look for it to arrive sometime this week.
