Archie comic heading into action adventure story

The Gazette (NJ) has a profile on Archie comic book artist Fernando Ruiz who was tapped to draw a action-adventure version of Archie that is due out in the latter part of September. The title of the four-part series is The Man From R.I.V.E.R.D.A.L.E. a play on the 1960’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E. TV series. The story places Archie with his spy cousin, Andy Andrews.

“This has honestly been one of the most fun projects of my entire career,” said Ruiz, 40. “One of the most fun and challenging aspects of this project is that I really have been pushed to go crazy with the art. This is a much more action-packed story than we’re used to seeing in Archie.

“The panels and layouts I would use to show Archie walking down the halls of Riverdale High or hanging out at Pop’s Chok’lit Shoppe aren’t the same layouts and compositions I would use to show Archie fighting evil spies and zombies. It’s been a real blast.”

  1. Married life isn’t working for Mr. Andrews, so he’s looking for some “action”?

    Sorry, couldn’t resist 🙂

  2. There was the Man from R.I.V.E.R.D.A.L.E. series in Archie comics in the 1960’s.

  3. Based on reader demographics … will anyone get this connection or is the base 50 year olds?

  4. I think what we’re all missing out on here is an opportunity to figure out what the acronym R.I.V.E.R.D.A.L.E. stands for.

  5. @Rich – I’m guessing that the base IS 50 year olds as I’d be surprised if a young generation is into Archie.
