Tyler Perry unhappy with Boondocks parody
Skip to commentsThe Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder has created another tempest in a teapot after the June 20th episode ran making fun of Tyler Perry. A reportedly infuriated Perry retaliated behind the scenes.
Rumors began circulating days after the installment aired June 20 that an enraged Perry fired members of his staff due to possible leaks. Last week, the Los Angeles Times reported Perry contacted executives at Turner Broadcasting and threatened to end his relationship with them because of “The Boondocks” episode. Perry has two shows that air on TBS — “House of Payne” and “Meet the Browns.” Turner Broadcasting owns both TBS and Cartoon Network. (“The Boondocks” is a part of Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming block.) To keep the peace, Turner executives are said to have apologized to Perry for not warning him beforehand and vowed to never air the episode again. Cassie Bryan, a Turner spokeswoman, confirms the episode is not scheduled to re-air but was unable to say if it was banned.
In that same Detroit News article quoted above, Todd Boyd, a professor of critical studies at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts adds that Aaron’s work is impressive considering how fresh it can be despite the production time.
“The strength of ‘Boondocks’ as a comic strip was its ability to serve as a running commentary about what was going on in the culture. Because of the production schedule of television, it’s hard to be current in the commentary. But (McGruder) has always been very smart and politically astute. I can appreciate the willingness to go after people who are otherwise treated as sacred cows.”
