Popeye heading to big screen in CG feature

Comingsoon.net is reporing that Sony Pictures is developing a CG 3D version of E.C. Segar’s Popeye.

The storyline is being kept under wraps, but Popeye’s love interest Olive Oyl, nemesis Bluto and adopted child Swee’Pea will be part of the adventure, says Variety.

Arad says the new version will cover the themes of friendship, love, greed and life, and focus on human strengths and human frailties.

  1. Well blow me down! I wonder if Robin Williams has been approached? I can’t imagine anyone else doing a better Popeye.

  2. There was a CGI Popeye TV special about five years ago, “Popeye’s Voyage, The Quest for Pappy.”

Having kids, I’ve found myself having to watch a lot of awful stuff, but this special was surprisingly good. Usually when a cartoon is adapted to CGI, they lose a lot because they don’t duplicated the original animation techniques. In this one, they did, with surprisingly good results.

The story was good, too, and that may be because it was written by comedian Paul Reiser, who both knows how to write and is a Popeye fan. This film was as true to Popeye as a CGI film could be. I hope that the producers of the new movie can do this as well, but it’s hard to get hopes up.

  3. Great! This is another one to look forward to.

  4. Is this a CGI remake of the 1980 Robin Williams Popeye movie?

  5. Bobby, I really liked your Popeye character sketches and those comic pages.
