  1. The press has been referring to Vilks as a “cartoonist,” but it would be more accurate to describe him as a conceptual artist. He has worked in a variety of media, rarely in cartooning, and is not widely considered a cartoonist in Sweden.

    The artwork in question is really more of a sketch than a cartoon, and is part and parcel of a larger project of his called “Dogs.”

    The confusion likely stems from the American press’ inability to distinguish between Denmark and Sweden.
