Scott Stantis drawing in time lapse video

Hat tip to Rob Tornoe for finding this video. It’s Chicago Tribune editorial cartoonist Scott Stantis drawing one of his editorial cartoons.

One of the things I enjoy about watching these type of videos is seeing their process. I observed Scott doing most of the pencilling in the beginning (like most), but also going back to the pencil later in the process after much of the ink work was done. He also uses a Sharpie, which I always considered a no-no because it tends to fade and turn green over time. To each his own.

  1. That was a fun video. The music was great, too.

  2. “He also uses a Sharpie, which I always considered a no-no because it tends to fade and turn green over time”

I have a Prickly City Sunday original in my room. Scott’s pretty low-tech; the strip is drawn on legal size copy paper on thin pen (hence the scratchiness in the strip).

It’s probably the smallest Sunday original I own. I have daily originals that’s drawn bigger.

  3. Cool video to watch. I’ll use a Sharpie every once in a while. Not really too concerned about discolorization over time. Once it’s scanned and published it just gets stuck in a filing cabinet.
