Xkcd, a successful, quirky, nerd, geek, math webcomic is now available in book form beginning this week. The collection is entitled, “xkcd: volume 0,” and features the first 600 xkcd comics and includes “lot of doodles, notes, and puzzles in the margins.” It’s only available for purchase online and a portion of the profits go toward building a school in Laos through the charity Room to Read.
Xkcd is the brain-child of Randall Munroe who started the comic in 2005 while a contractor for NASA. Within the next two years, the strip’s popularity (and online merchandise) grew to the point where Randall was able to quit his job with NASA.
thanks for the heads up, Alan. Ordered.
Also, for the first 24 hours of the sale a signed version was available for an extra charge. But alas, the time has already passed.
I guess you DO have to be a rocket scientist to have a successful webcomic.
I knew I should have stuck to stick figures! #$%&!! 😀
I for one would love to read an account a year out of how the self-publishing plan unfolded and what was learned.
XKCD is one of those strips that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that a great strip is all about writing. A well done strip is a well written strip, even with stick figures.
