NY Daily News drops 1/4 of their comics

Over on the ComicsReporter.com, Tom Spurgeon received an email from someone in Queens that is reporting that the NY Daily News dropped 1/4 of their comic strips – which amounted to about 5 strips and a puzzle. If the report is true, the affected comics are: Cathy, Agnes, Peanuts Classics, Pooch Cafe, and Girls and Sports.

He’s put out a call for someone to verify the report. If you’re in the NY area and can confirm, contact Tom.

  1. I and my family are subscribers, on a yearly basis. We have 2 subscriptions delivered to our home. We live the Country Club/Throggs Neck area of the Bronx.

There are less comics, however, the comics removed such as ‘Agnes’, ‘Cathy’ and ‘Peanuts Classic’, were far better than some that are still in the Daily News, such as, ‘Pearls Before Swine’ which I find disgusting and very poor grammer.

I would have assumed that the readers would be told as to why or even asked, after all we keep your paper in print!

Waking up to the Daily News and its light hearted comics was what my husband and I looked forward to…now it is such a dissappointment. I did not make a comment when ‘Calvin & Hobbs’ was removed, again, to my dissappointment, but now I must speak out.

I have read your newspaper for about 50 years, even corresponding as a child to ‘Brenda Starr’ and ‘Winnie Winkle’ and receiving back mail from the latter when I submitted fashion designs to ‘Winnie Winkle’. In my archives I still have the mail sent to me. In fact, I chose my career in Fashion Design.

Comics, such as ‘Pearls Before Swine’ do not encourage, teach, but do malaign and insult…definetly not possitive. I trust the Daily News will not remove comics such as ‘For Better, For Worse’, ‘Gasoline Alley’, ‘Dagwood’, to name a few…

At this point we, who also subscribe to the NY Times, are considering dropping the NY Daily News…It’s up to the NY Daily News.

  2. Hedy,

It should be “My family and I are subscribers”, not “I and my family are subscribers”.

If you say â??Pearls Before Swineâ?? which I find disgusting and very poor grammer.” you should first check your own grammer.

I think she’s in the parlor.

  3. I’VE BEEN READING YOUR PAPER FOR AS LONG AS I CAN REMENBER. I LOVE YOUR SPORTS,EDITORIALS,VOICE OF THE PEOPLE AND GRIDLOCK SAM AND OF CAUSE THE DAILY EVENTS. MY ONLY COMPLAINT IS THAT I LOOK FOWARD TO SOME JOY AND HAPPINESS IN THE COMICS I REMENBER BEING TEASED BECAUSE I READ BRENDA STAR AS A YOUNG TEEN. PLEASE BRING BACK THE COMICS THAT WERE TAKING OUT AND MAYBE SOME OLD CLASSIC ONES AS WELL, MAYBE YOU CAN DO ONE PAGE OF YESTER YEAR COMICS
    THANK YOU

  4. Rob,
Whoever you are…my grammer was not the issue…perhaps you should comment on the comics and stay clear of me…and who gives a s___ what you think of where I am!
I know this is almost a year later to respond…just shows how often I check out this website…however, ‘For Better or Worse’ comic strip has also been removed as of the new year and that is why I am writing again…if you find you need to comment on my grammer again, I suggest you get a life.

    Armando,
I agree with you 100%…As you stated ‘Looking forward to some joy and happiness in the comics,’ is exactly how I feel…I, not only read ‘Brenda Starr’, I sent fashion designs to her and ‘Winnie Winkle’. They both sent me cards and letters thanking me for the submissions…it encouraged me to pursue a career in fashion design…I graduated from Fashion Institute of Technology with honors…needless to say I have had a wonderful life…

  5. No, lefitte, she meant her “grammer” as in her mama’s mama.

  6. Lefitte and Pab, with names like that, you both shouldn’t be making any comments!!!

    Need I say more?

  7. Rob,
I do not think that you have the right to impugn the integrity of “Pearls Before Swine,” my friend.

Your e-mail below is riddled with so many spelling and grammatical errors, one would think that it was composed by a five year old. Then again, when I read that you were from the Bronx, it explained quite a few things.

For goodness sake, when you complained about the strip in your poorly-written missive, you spelled â??grammarâ?? incorrectly! Letâ??s review this embarrassingly long run on sentence littered with spelling and grammatical errors:

    YOU WROTE:

â??There are less comics, however, the comics removed such as â??Agnesâ??, â??Cathyâ?? and â??Peanuts Classicâ??, were far better than some that are still in the Daily News, such as, â??Pearls Before Swineâ?? which I find disgusting and very poor grammer.â?

Good lord! Learn how to use punctuation and please â?? PLEASE â?? learn how to SPELL grammar. Better yet, learn how to properly USE grammar within a sentence!

I am sure that Stephen Pastis would get a kick out of your e-mail.

  8. Roland, Pab and Lefitte,

Obviously, you’ve missed the whole point of ‘comic’ comments. The comments should be geared to the fact that so many comics have been removed from the Daily News!

When will we band together and protest what The Daily News has done, and leave each other’s GRAMMAR alone?

    H

  9. The point is you criticized Pearls for having bad grammar, yet your own grammar is worse than I’ve ever seen in PBS. So if you want to dish it out, don’t be a kettle calling out someone in glass houses.
